Make World Mental Health Day YOUR Initiative

Did you know the world has observed World Mental Health Day on October 10th since 1992?

World Mental Health Day was created by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) - an organization that is present in over 150 countries world wide!

World Mental Health Day is an initiative meant to help individuals and their communities:

    • Promote mental health in the school, home, and workplace
    • Envision a world where mental health is a priority for all people
    • Build awareness and advocate against social stigma
    • Improve care and treatment for those currently suffering
    • Celebrate those who have or are overcoming mental health challenges
    • Empower those who live in silence for fear of being discovered, misunderstood, or deprived of essential care

‘Mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions – such as depressionanxiety, schizophrenia, and others.

However, according to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

Positive mental health should be something that we all strive to achieve - finding our own unique equilibrium so we do not get overwhelmed, stressed or succumb to a mental illness whether at work, at home or in our community.

World Mental Health Day highlights the importance of mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against the social stigma.

Here are 5 ways you can personally join the initiative!

    1. Make a pledge - that you will make your mental health a priority - get loved ones, friends and colleagues to join
    2. Practice self care - be aware of what causes symptoms of stress and develop your own unique ways to promote good health. Consult our blog "Caregiver Mindfulness" for some tips.
    3. Help spread awareness - share this blog or information and media from WFMH on your social media platforms or with those you know who are suffering
    4. Reach out - to a loved one, friend or colleague who has been facing mental health issues and let them know you care
    5. Participate in a cause - the Thrive NYC initiative to fight mental illness provides first aid training, mental health plans, and a 24hr text/hotline
