Can Adult Day Care and Home Health Care Work Together?

Home health care can afford you or your loved one the opportunity to have help with tasks at home, managed care and the chance to get out for walks, doctor appointments, and social activities such as adult day care. Home health care and adult day care can enrich the lives of clients and their families.

While home health care creates meaningful social connections between nurses and home health aides and their clients, the services of adult day care can provide fun and diverse activities. Some examples of activities that adult day care centers may offer include:

    • Games
    • Exercise
    • Outings
    • Crafts
    • Therapy – including dance, pet, music, occupational, and physical
    • Cooking
    • Meditation

The University of Rochester Medical Center reports that social interaction can not only improve quality of life, but actually extend life. “Relationships and social interactions even help protect against illness by boosting your immune system.”

The benefits of engaging in social activities include:

    • Reduced risk of depression
    • Lower blood pressure
    • Potentially decreased risk of illnesses such as:
      • Alzheimer’s
      • Cardiovascular problems
      • Different types of cancer
      • Osteoporosis
      • Rheumatoid arthritis

In Greater Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life from Berkley.edu, a reported study of more than 1,100 seniors followed individuals without dementia over the course of 12 years. The study found: “The rate of cognitive decline was 70 percent less in people with frequent social contact than those with low social activity.”
